Music therapy is an arts-based approach to holistic, social, and psychological wellbeing. In the UK, it is a profession regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council and qualification to practice is gained through a masters degree. Music therapy services may be contracted to address individual or group need, as well as broader community need. Participants in music therapy do not need to have any musical experience.
My practice is rooted in a creative approach, meaning that therapeutic benefit is gained through the inherent social, expressive, communicative, and relationship-building aspects of music-making with each other. It is a great approach for those who are unable to express themselves verbally or who are seeking a different way to understand themselves and/or others. You can learn more by exploring my publications or by getting in touch to hear about specific examples of music therapy

Arts and wellbeing consultation is the employment of expert services to help train staff or improve project outcomes. You might benefit from employing me as a consultant if you or your organisation are interested in learning about:
How you can develop your music-based work with vulnerable communities
How to integrate critical anti-oppressive thinking into music-based practices
How to develop participatory arts projects with people who have limited musical experience
Improving the socio-musical skillset of your practice: for example, how to make music safely and productively with disabled children or adults in intensive psychiatric care)
How to curate outcome measures and evaluate these with compatible and meaningful evaluation methods

I am currently a doctoral researcher using arts-based methods to understand more about established and systemic narratives and discourses within music therapy practices. This involves curating an exploratory and creative methodology which best answers research questions and get ‘under the surface’ of a topic. It can involve interviews, focus groups, art-making, ethnography, and so much more.
This type of research can be applied broadly, from arts-based service evaluations to pilot community projects. Research can help understand if and how outcomes have been met, thereby directly informing future projects and funding.
If you’re interested to learn how research can be part of your work, get in touch.

My preferred working style is highly collaborative and I thrive in vulnerable and open thinking spaces. I am confident, flexible, and dependable, and love to learn from other people’s experiences.
